  • The Scanpst.exe also tries to turn any file into a personal folders (.PST) file
  • When you run scanpst.exe, it makes a backup copy of any personal folders before trying to repair it

How to use Inbox using Inbox Repair Tool

To recover the outlook data you need to run Inbox repair tool. The location where you can find the scanpst.exe are:

In windows Vista

:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

In Windows XP and 2000

:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

To run scanpst.exe, steps:

  • Close Outlook
  • Got to tool > Folder options > view and change the hidden file and folder settings to visible
  • Search for the scanpst.exe in your system drive
  • execute it using run as administrator privilages
  • Click on the browse button to select the PST file and after choosing the desired PST file click on the start button to start the repairing process
  • it will show you a list of recovered folders. These recovered folders are usually empty because this is a rebuilt .pst file. You should also see the folder named Lost and found. This folder contains the recovered files. Items that are not present in this or are missing will not recover anymore using Inbox repair tool.
  • Now create new PST files and drag all the recovered items from lost and found folder to your personal folders.

Run scanpst.exe if you feel that the pst files are having problems but if you are not satisfied with the results and found that some of the files are missing then you can purchase third party tools that can completely recover all the items of PST files.
